A 58-year-old woman in Florida has been arrested nearly a week after she allegedly killed a 35-year-old Black mother of four — fatally shooting the victim in front of her young son — in what local authorities say was the violent culmination of a multi-year feud between the neighbors.
Susan Louise Lorincz was taken into custody Tuesday evening and charged with one count each of first-degree manslaughter with a firearm, culpable negligence, and battery, as well as two counts of assault in the shooting death of Ajike “AJ” Owens, authorities announced.
The arrest came as authorities were coming under increased pressure to bring charges against Lorincz for shooting her unarmed neighbor through the front door of her home after Owens had knocked several times in order to speak with Lorincz about her aggressive and allegedly racist actions towards Owens’ children earlier in the day.
Supreme Court Rules For Black Voters
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court on Thursday issued a surprising 5-4 ruling in favor of Black voters in a congressional redistricting case from Alabama, with two conservative justices joining liberals in rejecting a Republican-led effort to weaken a landmark voting rights law.
Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Brett Kavanaugh aligned with the court's liberals in affirming a lower-court ruling that found a likely violation of the Voting Rights Act in an Alabama congressional map with one majority Black seat out of seven districts in a state where more than one in four residents is Black. The state now will have to draw a new map for next year's elections.
The decision was keenly anticipated for its potential effect on control of the closely divided U.S. House of Representatives. Because of the ruling, new maps are likely in Alabama and Louisiana that could allow Democratic-leaning Black voters to elect their preferred candidates in two more congressional districts.
Spider-Man: Across The Spiderverse
One of the directors behind this month’s critically acclaimed animated outing, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, has promised much of Into the Spider-Verse fan-favorite Spider-Ham in the finale, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. Speaking with Collider, co-director Joaquim Dos Santos was asked outright why the anthropomorphic pig variant of Peter Parker did not feature more in the latest sequel, with the filmmaker revealing that this will be rectified when we return to the madness of the Spider-Verse next year.
Introduced to audiences in 2018’s Oscar winning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Spider-Ham (voiced by John Mulaney) hails from Earth-8311. In a somewhat different story to his human counterpart, Peter Porker aka Spider-Ham began life as a spider who, after being bitten by a radioactive pig, was transformed into the superhero we have all come to know and love.
